While driving to work today I put on the radio and came to know that father of a young Delhi girl is advising her to leave her job because one guy is eveteasing her. Shouldn't it be the other way around? Shouldn't the guy be punished for troubling the girl? I am unable to put the incident out of my mind. Every Indian girl knows what eve teasing is (btw the term is used only in India). I can't recall thinking much about it while growing up but this might be because I grew up before acid throwing became the norm.
It is just extremely sad and unfortunate that just when parents were becoming comfortable with the idea of their daughters working in offices, the growing crime rate will bring them back inside the houses. If the current crime rate continues the time is not far when the parents would force their daughters to drop education and career and focus on being a good housewife.
The section of people who do not want their daughters to get Delhi University education is already growing. I know two couples who decided for security reasons to not to send their daughters to North Campus, Delhi University. This is extremely detrimental to the progress of women and pushes us behind by many decades. With a growing daughter at home, I am extremely concerned of these recent happenings and hope I would be happily able to allow her to do whatever she wants to do with her life.
I will honest here though that thanks to the recent happenings, security is one of my biggest concerns. The other day, the thought crossed my mind that I would like my kiddo to be in IB school so that she can go abroad and study. It was for no other reason but that Delhi is an extremely unsafe place for woman and it is better to study outside. You might err while growing up and nobody wants acid thrown on their faces for a small error in judgement.
What will I advice my daughter if a guy troubles her everyday? Will I tell her to do graduation through correspondence, go abroad and study, to start wearing burkha or to leave her job? I don't know but I hope I don't have to make this difficult choice...
