Tamas Thoughts

It is only sometimes that a worthwhile Indian program features on television, so I am really looking forward to watching Tamas at 9 pm on History channel on August 15. Have watched it earlier and have read the book as well but don't mind watching it again. I have heard so many partition stories from my grand parents that it is a topic of eternal interest and it is a very much a part of my history. Watch it for the performances of Amrish and Om Puri and others.

Besides I love the shabads in Tamas and here are links to some of them:

1. Purza Purza Kat Mare

This is one of my favorite shabads mostly because of the lyrics and also the energy with which it is usually rendered. Here is a sample:

Soora so pahchaniye, je lade deen ke het,
Purza-purza kat mare, kabhu na chhade khet
(Basically it means that only courageous people fight for poor (deen ke het). He maybe cut into pieces (purza purza kat mare) but he should never leave the field (kabhu na chhade khet))

A slightly different version of this shabad is also the war cry of Sikh Infantry unit of Indian Army.

Deh Shiva var mohe
shubh karman ko kabhi na daroo
na daroo ar siyoo jab jab laroon
nischai kar apni jeet karoon

The last line (Nischay Kar apni jeet karo) is the moto of Army institute of law and is a recurring and oft repeated theme in Army literature.

Sooraa so pehichaaneeai jo larai dheen kae haeth... He alone is known as a spiritual hero, who fights in defense of "religion"... Deen/Din is Arabic word for Religion.

This hymn is part of Chandi Charitra (Shakti Ki Puja) written by Dashamesh himself.

If you are really interested in poetry by Guru Gobind Singh then you must listen to Jaap Sahib. It is slightly difficult (at least for me :)

Jaap Sahib ? U mean Japji Sahib ? Japji Sahib was written by Guru Nanak Dev ji.

Jaap Sahib is different from Japji Sahib. Jaap Sahib is written by Guru Gobind Singh ji. Read about it here:http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaap_Sahib.
