The Perils And Pleasure Of Working With Millennials

Over the last one year, I have worked with a number of members of younger generation or Millennials, as they like to be referred to. I ended up spending a good amount of time interacting with the young and dynamic members of the community. I can safely say that they are different, very different, in fact from my generation. It was interesting to interact with them and I ended up learning many new things.

One of the foremost learnings was that this generation is just not scared of trying out new and innovative things. No wonder it is known as the entrepreneurial generation. Almost nothing pulls them back. It can be safely said that they are vagabond in their thinking. They move from one thing to another at a lightening speed. Clearly they don’t believe in focusing on one thing. I may be wrong but most of the people I interacted with were working on more than one project. It is as if a single thing cannot hold their interest for a long time, so at any given moment of time they would be simultaneously working on a number of projects.

Millennials have been called lazy, selfish, vain and much more. All this is possibly true...didn’t see any evidence to the contrary. However, it would not be fair to call them just this. It is also a generation which is extremely hard working and doesn’t believe in following any rules. The last part might be seen as negative by many but I find it positive. They believe in going beyond the obvious and you do have to break rules to do that. It is normal for them to work through the night...I do need my sleep, thank you. And they are not bothered that you might be sleeping or not working or on a vacation. They wouldn’t think twice before calling you at 12.30 am to come for a conference call since the developer is available only in the twilight zone. By Gawd...I am yet to get over this one.

Meaning of emergency differs for this generation. For me it is generally a matter of life and death. For a millennial it can be literally anything from new post on Twitter to a competitior’s strategy to change the font size for their website. So sometimes it was tough to find a middle path. Nevertheless, it can be safely said that there is never a dull moment while working with Millennials.
