Cheers!

Last month I happened to stop at Cafe Coffee Day at Mumbai airport which, much to my surprise, was offering alcoholic beverages. While I have been in innumerable pubs across the country, this was the first time I was alone and toyed with the idea of whether or not to order a drink. What the heck, I thought and ordered my Vodka with Limca.

While the drink materialised I started to think that this scenario was unheard of till some time back in the country. A woman sitting alone and ordering drinks...are you nuts? I myself wouldn't have done it about five years back. Should I take this as a sign of changing times? Does this mean that Indian woman can now enjoy her drink in peace without bothering about what the folks at nearby table are talking about?

Tempting though it is to draw conclusions, I have decided not to read too much in the incident. One this is a very small incident but still a welcome change nevertheless. Secondly, I was in Mumbai, the most liberated city in the country. Am sure this is not possible in Delhi, the capital city of the country. The odd glances, hushed talk would have been the order of the day. Nothing of the sort happened in Mumbai.... Only city which is likely to offer similar experience in the country is Bangalore and maybe Pune.

Dunno if this is a reflection of the changing times but I sure enjoyed my drink and intend to repeat whenever I am in the city. Cheers to the changing times; many more to come am sure...
